Condors

The condor lives in the Andes and the adjacent Pacific coasts of western South America. The adult male has a wing span of up to 3 metres (10 feet) and nests at heights of up to 5,000 metres (16,000 feet), usually on inaccessible rock ledges. Condors are scavengers, feeding on carrion, such as the carcasses of deer, sheep and cattle.

On the day that we climbed Cerro Benítez it looked as if we would not see any condors. However, having resigned ourselves to missing out, we had just settled down to a picnic near the summit, when a large condor suddenly appeared, perhaps it smelt our food.
