Valle de la Luna

Named for its resemblance to a moon-scape, the floor of Valley of the Moon used to be a lake. The present landscape is the result of seismic quakes and erosion by wind, heat and solar radiation. It is home to some spectacular sunsets.

The salt caked floor of the Valley.

Road through the valley

Close up of the salt formations -
snow melt bubbles up through the earth's surface and then evaporates
to leave the salts to accummulate

Jagged rocks and smooth sand

A man surveys the road ahead near the site of Las Tres Marias
A sand dune amid the rocks

View of the near hills and distant mountains

Topography of the weathered rock

A crowd gathers to watch the sunset

The sunset itself
